10 tips for buying a used car

Buying a used car can be a daunting process. Doing your research is absolutely critical in making sure you get a good deal and that you don’t buy a lemon. As someone who has been involved in the purchase and sale of thousands of used cars, I have decided to put together a list of good car buying research techniques to help you in your used car conquest.

Tip #1 – Find out how many owners the vehicle has had. The more owners a vehicle has had the more likely it is that the vehicle has been abused. One owner cars are always your best scenario.

Tip #2 – Get the service records and service receipts. If someone can document the service they have done to a car from day one, you’ve obviously found a vehicle that has been well maintained and cared for by the previous owner. A car with no service records and receipts is a huge risk. Proceed with caution.

Tip #3 – Have a reputable mechanic look the car over and take it for a test drive. If you’re serious about buying the car, then a couple hundred dollar investment to have a proper mechanic check it out is a wise investment. However, take the car to a specialist not just whoever. If you’re buying a Porsche, take it to a Porsche specialist. Taking it to the local guy in town because it’s convenient and easy could be a huge waste of time if they don’t have experience servicing Porsche automobiles.

Tip #4 – Have a body shop check the vehicle out! Most mechanics don’t do body work, and if they do you should be wary. Working on a car’s motor and a car’s body is two completely different talents. A body mechanic will also be able to give you a better idea of what kind of paint work has been done to the car, and tell you whether or not the car has been in an accident.

Tip #5 – Look at the long term costs associated with owning a vehicle. As Americans we are obsessed with having brand name labels. But can you really afford owning a brand name label? Find out how much tires are going to cost, find out how much an oil change is going to cost, find out how much headlamps and taillights are going to cost if they need replacing. Everyone gets caught up in their monthly payment and they fail to take into consideration service costs. If you’re buying a Porsche are you aware that the windshield wipers alone can cost as much as $200 to replace? Did you know a headlamp is about $1500? Also find out what scheduled services need to be done and when. Does the manufacturer recommend a 35K, 50K, 75K and 100K services? If so what do they cost and what is included?

Tip #6 – Location, location, location! With the Internet at our fingertips, it has never been easier to find the exact vehicle you are looking for. However, contrary to popular belief, Texas, Florida and the Mid West are not the best places to buy a vehicle. These states often reach temperatures in excess of 95 degrees, and that leads to dashboard cracking, electrical problems and other extreme stress on your vehicle. These states are also often prone to flooding which means that car you are in love with very well may have been underwater at one point in time. Some of these states also act as fantastic resources for “title washing” because of relaxed registration laws. Why do you think there are so many used car dealers in these states?

Tip #7 – Get a Carfax right? Well yes a Carfax is helpful in finding out information about the vehicle you are interested in, BUT that does not mean that they are 100% accurate. ALWAYS have your Insurance Agent run the VIN# in their database to get a real background check done on the vehicle. Some agents will do this and some will not. But I can tell you it’s worth your while to try and get them to do it. I was looking at an Acura TL for a friend of mine that was located out of state but had a clean Carfax and Autocheck. The pictures looked great. So I told him to have his agent run the VIN. Thankfully his agent did! She found out that the car had actually had two claims filed under the previous owner. 1 for $2,000 and 1 for $11,000! Needless to say he didn’t buy that car.

Tip #8 – Stay away from Rental Cars! Remember the last time you rented a rental car? Did you check the fluids? Did you avoid over revving the engine? Did you avoid those pesky potholes? Did you care about the french fry and soda that you’re kid mashed into the carpets? OF COURSE NOT! So then why in the world would you want to buy a rental car that has had thousands of owners like you regularly using and abusing it the same way you did because it wasn’t their car? Also do you really think the attendant working behind the counter making $8-$10 an hour really cares about making sure that the vehicle is serviced regularly and properly? Rental Cars are not a good idea.

Tip #9 – Used Cars don’t apply for good interest rates right? WRONG! Banks write loans based on risk. If you are trying to finance a vehicle that is 15 years old and has 170,000 miles, what are the odds the bank is going to be able to sell that vehicle if they repossess it and get their money back? NOT very good! So the interest rate will be extremely high because of the risk. However, that doesn’t mean that good used car rates aren’t out there. Credit unions tend to be very competitive with rates between 4%-6% and Certified pre-owned vehicles can qualify for rates as low as 2% through manufacturer financing. These vehicles also get an extensive inspection that must meet the manufacturers approval. SO ASK for a copy of that inspection. It will tell you everything the service department did to bring that vehicle up to spec. If the dealer won’t show you that receipt that is a huge red flag.

Tip #10 – Don’t buy on impulse! TAKE YOUR TIME, DO YOUR RESEARCH and THINK BEFORE YOU BUY! As far as I’m concerned if it wasn’t meant to be, then it wasn’t meant to be. So go home and think about it. I can’t tell you how many times someone has called me up after I left their house or showroom and said “Hey, my General Manager (or Wife) said I really need to sell this car! I can knock $1000 off the price! So take your time and do your research it will save you thousands as opposed to costing you thousands!

So in the end what is the perfect scenario? A one owner car located in CA somewhere between Santa Cruz and San Diego that has only had one previous owner, has been in no accidents, has never been a rental, and has meticulous service records. If you can find a car like this you are more than likely going to pay a premium. A premium that I personally feel is well worth it! So good luck with your search!
